Ellen Carey approaches photography as picture making rather than picture taking. Her interests are both visual and conceptual, including chaos theory, fractal geometry, and symmetry and asymmetry as found not only in art, but nature, science, architecture and mathematics. For close to three decades, she has been usuing the large format Polaroid 20x24" camera to create her self-portraits, pulls and photograms.
Carey has had over 40 solo exhibitions, been included in more than 100 group exhibitions and has received numerous grants. Her photographs have been collected by the Smithsonian, Whitney, the Wadsworth and Yale just top name a few. Carey is currently an Associate Profesor at the Harvard Art School at the University of Hartford in Connecticut.
