Vittorio Sella (1859 – 1943), a legend in mountaineering and photography, began photographing in the Alps from his home in Biella, Italy. Over his lifetime, he photographed many of the major mountain ranges all over the world. He accompanied the Duke of Abruzzi on many of his expeditions as expedition photographer.

Sella's mountain photographs are a testament to his photographic skills. In his earliest climbs he carried a 12 x 15 inch large-format camera, coating each of the glass 'wet plates', prior to exposure.
