Curator Statement

“To achieve a degree of significance and originality involves an unusual degree of commitment and rigor… [A photographic education] often privileges the mundane and ephemeral and achieves relevance not through the literal subject matter, but the attitude, passion, and conviction of the photographer.

You are the future we could never predict. You will subvert all our tired assumptions, our cliches, and conventions. You will redraw our maps from our seeds unfamiliar and disorienting forms will sprout. Our caution will become your risk. When we seek the reassurance of answers you will commit to the elegance of inquiry. You will outdo us, confuse us, and approach the unknown future with an open heart.”

 - Stephen Frailey

The 9 photographers in New School have recently finished or are currently pursuing a photographic education in Boston. These students have the commitment and rigor that Frailey spoke of and their images explore identity, politics, place, and family in vulnerable and unique ways. These artists are the future of photography; their journeys have only begun.

Anika Am’s use of nonlinear narrative and collage to capture vulnerability and the ephemeral. Kevin Moore’s exploration of politics and queerness through self portraiture.  Connor Noll’s work explores the isolation in the suburban landscape. The unnerving emotions in Ashton Lyle’s work about living in a surveillance state. Jordan Van Savage’s exploration of Florence, Italy while studying abroad. Jyoti Liggin’s use of light and texture to explore places unknown to her; her first few months in Boston and the warmth of Laos in January. Ethan Johnson’s directed images to explore the complicated relationship between him and his father. Ben Carroll’s perception of loss and domesticity in an 18 year marriage. Marilyn Boatwright’s work on their relationship with their family after leaving for college.
